Google's Panda Update is a search filter introduced in February 2011 meant to stop sites with poor quality content from working their way into Google's top search results. Panda is updated from time-to-time. When this happens, sites previously hit may escape, if they've made the right changes.

"The stated purpose of the Google Panda algorithm update was to reward high-quality websites and diminish the presence of low-quality websites in Google’s organic search engine results."

The Panda algorithm update addressed a number of problematic phenomena in Google SERPs, including:
    Thin content
    Duplicate content
    Low-quality content
    Lack of authority/trustworthiness
    Low-quality user-generated content (UGC)
    Content farming
    High ad-to-content ratio
    Low-quality content surrounding affiliate links
    Websites blocked by users
    Content mismatching search query
